Prep Time: 5-10 mins

Cook Time: 8-10 mins

Yield: approx. 30 cookies

Prank your kiddos with lump of coal cookies. They’re sugar cookies made to look like a lump of coal. Safe, not to mention yummy too!

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups plain (all purpose) flour
  • 1Β½ tsp baking powder
  • 1 cup (250g) butter
  • 1 cup sugar (caster/super fine is preferred)
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • Β½ tsp salt
  • black gel or paste food colouring

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 180/350/Gas Mark 5. Prepare 2 baking sheets with parchment paper or a silpat.
  2. Cream sugar and butter together until light and fluffy. Add the egg and vanilla extract.
  3. Sift the flour and mix until a dough forms. Using a gel or paste food colouring, add food colouring a bit at a time until you get a dark coal-like colour.
  4. Divide the dough into 2 pieces and place one half in the fridge.
  5. Break off chunks of dough until your desired coal size. Roll or rough them up a bit and place on the baking tray. Place in the freezer while working on the second half of the dough and place in the freezer. Bake first batch of cooking for 8-10 minutes while the second batch cools in the freezer, then repeat with the second batch.
  6. Allow to cool on the sheet for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack.
  7. Allow to cool completely before storing in an airtight container.

Thanks for stopping by Gghie, let me know how it goes. I reserve the right to not be responsible if it ruins your Christmas for your children. They'll be happy again one moment later when they eat them though. LOL.

Bwahahahaha! Awesome. I totally want to do this...but I know my kid. She'll cry for sure. She already cries "Santa is bringing me coal!!!" every time she gets in trouble. :)

    Do these have cocoa??

    1. Lisa {Sweet 2 Eat Baking} β€” December 8, 2012 @7:23 pm Reply

They're no chocolate in this sugar cookie recipe. But if you substitute some of the flour for cocoa powder, you can make a chocolate variety too.

      Thanks for stopping by.

This is a cute prank, and these cookies look delicious. Really, some pregnant women eat coal? Interesting.

    1. Lisa {Sweet 2 Eat Baking} β€” December 11, 2012 @4:58 pm Reply

Haha, yes. Well, yes and no. When I was a child, my dad was a coal miner therefore we received free coal. Coal was the main fuel for fires back then and it was widely known that pregnant woman used to crave it. Some used to eat it while others just craved eating it but didn't. Strange, huh?

      Thanks for stopping by.

First "man baby" made me literally laugh out loud just now. Love it. Also, this is the cutest prank ever. I'd totally be naughty if it meant I got delicious cookies. That sounds terrible but ugh they look so yummy. ;)

    1. Lisa {Sweet 2 Eat Baking} β€” December 11, 2012 @5:04 pm Reply

Hehe, but he *IS* a giant man-baby. I've called him that ever since I started this blog, and before. And rock on with the naughtiness just as long as Santa brings you coal cookies and not actual coal! ;)

I thought you might want to know....it looks like you forgot to list the food coloring in your ingredient list.

    These are so darn cute!

    1. Lisa {Sweet 2 Eat Baking} β€” December 11, 2012 @5:19 pm Reply

Thanks for the catch Loretta. I did leave it off purposely as it's a general sugar cookie recipe that anyone can use to make any style of sugar cookies. But now that you mention it, I might just add it in there for the purpose of making this recipe specific and complete for what it is.

Help! Trying to make these now, and having some issues:

    1. When do I add baking powder? I'm guessing with the flour, but the instructions don't specify.

    2. I don't have gel food coloring, so I'm mixing drops of liquid food coloring to make black. I've done it, but when I add it to the dough, I can't get it darker than brown, even when mixing up additional batches of black color & adding it in. How dark will the dough get?

As a teacher, I'd love to make these for all my students. Any advice?

Hi Angela, I emailed you earlier about this. I hope you got my email?
