What is margarine?

Margarine is a vegetable oil-based spread designed as a substitute for butter.

Created in the 19th century to address butter shortages, it has become a popular alternative due to its lower cost and reduced saturated fat content.

Typically made from soybean, canola, or sunflower oils, margarine is processed to solidify the oils and create a spreadable consistency. It often contains added emulsifiers, colourants, and flavourings to mimic the taste and appearance of butter.

Over time, formulations have evolved, offering varieties with less trans fat and improved nutritional profiles. However, opinions on its health benefits remain divided, with some preferring natural butter or other spreads for cooking and baking.
